When you arrive at the hall you will notice that there are chairs around the edge of the dance floor. These are not assigned to particular dancers so find a place where you will be comfortable. Change from your outside shoes to the comfortable clean shoes you brought to dance in; your feet (and the floor) will appreciate it!
One of our regular dancers will come over to you and welcome you.
It’s a really good idea to show up on time, rather than fashionably late, as many of the dance basics will be introduced early in the evening. No one is expected to learn everything there is to know on the first night, but we will teach enough to have lots of fun.
Each dance is led by a caller, who will explain the figures that make up each dance. The sequence will be walked through to make sure everyone understands each movement. You won’t be expected to memorise the dance. Once the music starts, the caller will keep prompting to enable you to move in time to the music, until everyone has got it! Don’t worry if you get confused, the other dancers will help you. Look out for eye contact pointing you in the right direction or a hand inviting you to do a two-hand turn.
When the dance ends, partners thank each other, find new partners, and form up again, and the evening goes on like that. If you would like to take a rest, then please do so. There is no obligation to dance each dance.
In the middle of the evening, we take a 15-20 minute. It’s a good opportunity to meet new people or catch up with old friends. We do not have facilities to make refreshments so please bring your own drink.
By the end of the evening, we hope that you leave with a smile on your face.
Absolutely! We have many dancers who do not arrive with a dancing partner. We also have many dancers who will change partners after each dance so you can be assured that you will not be left sitting at the side.
Our dancing is mostly English Folk and Country Dances from the 17th and 18th centuries (think Pride & Prejudice) and traditional folk dances through to more modern dances.
You can look at some of the videos on our YouTube page to see what kind of dancing we do.
No special clothing is required so come as you are! If you’re dressed up, that’s fine; if not, that’s OK too.
Most people wear skirt/trousers/shorts/kilt with a blouse/shirt/t-shirt. Bring a pair of flat shoes to change into when you arrive. The outfits range from casual to smart casual.
Dress for comfort and safety and you will be fine!
£4 per session per dancer.
